1: What is GATE ?

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), is an All-India Examination conducted by the seven Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science, Banglore, on behalf of the National Coordinating Board – GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

2: What is the objective of GATE ?

The objective of GATE is to identify meritorious and motivated candidates for admission to Postgraduate Programs Engineering at the national level. Some Engineering Colleges/Institutes specify GATE as a mandatory qualification even for admission for Postgraduate Programs. It serves as a benchmark for normalization of the Undergraduate Engineering Education in the country.

3: What are the basic features of GATE ?

To Pursue M.Tech program in a leading institute of the country the benefits are:

Admission to Postgraduate Courses, with MHRD Scholarship/Assistantship, in Engineering/Technology at Colleges/Institutes is open only to those who qualify in GATE.

More and better companies are coming for Campus Placement in leading Institutes.

Higher salaries are being offered for M.Tech as compared to B.E.

M. Tech degree leads to specialization and furthering of interest in a certain area which may lead to Ph.D.

M.Tech degree is a must for those wishing to apply for Faculty/ Research position in educational Institutes/R&D Centers.

Scholarship is paid during M.Tech, so no headache to parents for financial requirements.

The M.Tech program is a 4 semester (24 months) program; so get more time to work out career opportunities.

MOST IMPORTANTLY to get to be a part of any Nationally reputed educational institute and enjoy learning and research.

Some Industries and Foreign universities have indicated their interest in GATE qualified candidates.

GATE qualified candidates in the Engineering disciplines are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories.

Some College/Institutes specify GATE as mandatory qualification even for admission of self-financing students.

4: Can you provide some information on this examination?

An ME or MTech degree is a desirable qualification for our young engineers seeking a rewarding professional career. Engineering students, while in the final year of their degree course, spend considerable time in seeking an opportunity to pursue higher studies in foreign universities. Many students may not be aware that there are several institutions in the country, offering specialised postgraduate programmes in various disciplines.

Attractive scholarships / Assistantships for postgraduate courses in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Pharmacy in engineering colleges or institutes in the country, are available to those who qualify through GATE.

Some engineering colleges / institutes specify GATE as a mandatory qualification even for admission to their postgraduate programmes. The candidate is required to find the procedure of final selection and award of Scholarship / Assistantship from the respective institution to which he / she seeks admission.

GATE qualified candidates (in Engineering subjects) are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in CSIR Laboratories.

5: How you measure the GATE Score?

The results are declared in the form of a percentile score calculated as follows:

If the total number of examinees in a given discipline is, say 5940, and the number of examinees who have secured marks less than the candidate is, say 5830, then the percentile score of the candidate is: (5830 / 5940) x 100 =98.15

This score ceases to be valid after March 31st of the second year following the year of declaration of GATE results. The score becomes valid only after the candidate completes all requirements of the qualifying degree.
