energy storage is higher in electric or a magnetoc ckt. why is there an air gap between the windings of motor and transformer?cant we directly couple the primary and secondary windings electrically? pls send ur comments. |

energy stored in magnetic medium is far more than that in electric medium for the same volume bcaz the energy density for magnetic medium is more.If you want more details go through emf text book In transformers there is no air gap as such.But for some applications like radio frequency we use air gap.
In machines to convert the electrical energy into mechanical or vice versa theres should be a rotor .To tranfer or receive the energy to/from rotor we need a stationaty part.This is stator.To reduce the loss of energy while transfering energy b/w these two we use very small air gap.The air gap should be as small as possible but never be zero (which lead to mechanical friction).
