List of IIIT in India
(Chronological Order)
IIIT is the generic name for several Institutes of Information Technology
in India, each a mini university in itself. Many of these institutions have been
subsequently renamed to better identify their affiliations and goals. The IIITs
were conceived to be forerunners in the information technology education sector,
at a time when India was going through a phase of unprecedented boom in the
software industry (Years 1998 - 2000). The course curriculum at these institutes
is at par with similar offerings at computer science departments of Indian
Institute of Technologies IIT. Due to the competitive nature of the admission at
these institutions, only a selected few make it to these universities.
International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H)
The International institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (also IIIT-Hyderabad,
IIIT-H) is an autonomous, self-supporting institution started in 1998 with seed
support from the Government of Andhra Pradesh. IIIT is a research university, at
its core. A major goal of IIIT is to impart a uniquely broad and
interdisciplinary IT education of the highest academic quality. This is achieved
through an integrated curriculum that consists of a highly diverse set of IT
courses, interdisciplinary IT research projects, day-to-day interaction with
industry, preparation in entrepreneurship and personality development courses.
International Institute of Information Technology - Bangalore (IIIT-B)
iiit-b was started on September 15, 1999 as Indian Institute of Information
Technology - Bangalore drawing inspiration from the established "Institutions of
National Importance" in India, such as Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs),
National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs),
Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), National
Institute of Design (NID), National Law School University of India (NLSUI), and
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). In January 2005, the name was
changed to the present one.
Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Gwalior (IIITM-G)
The Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Gwalior (IIITM
Gwalior), is a deemed university, which was the first IIIT established by the
Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India in 1997, as an
initiative to foster IT and management education in India. IIITM Gwalior is the
foremost institution providing Technical and Managerial Education in the areas
of Information Technology and Management, in India. The only institution of its
kind in India, IIITM is at the vanguard of imparting superior quality higher
education and pertinent skills. It is located in the city of Gwalior, in the
northern part of the state of Madhya Pradesh.
Indian Institute of Information Technology, ALLAHABAD (IIIT-A)
The 'Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad ('IIIT-A') was
established in 1999, as a center of excellence in Information Technology and
computer science by the Government of India. The institute was conferred the
"Deemed University" status in the year 2000. The Institute thus became empowered
to have a perpetual seal and award degrees subsequent to the conduct of its own
examinations.

Indian Institute of Information Technology, Calcutta (IIIT-C)
Currently Known as
SIT - Kolkata, IT Dept, WBUT-Kolkata
The School of Information Technology Kolkata (also SIT and formerly IIIT-C) is the Information Technology Department of the WBUT. The institution started
as Indian Institute of Information Technology - Calcutta in 2000 with seed support from the Government of West Bengal in association with the IT Industry.
The vision of SIT was conceived as an apex institute for IT education, training and research. Its broad vision is to serve as a catalyst and an agent of change to
steer the State of West Bengal towards integration with the global network society in the new millennium. A major goal of School of Information Technology is
to impart a uniquely broad and interdisciplinary IT education of the highest academic quality. This is achieved through an integrated curriculum that consists of a
highly diverse set of IT courses, interdisciplinary IT research projects, day-to-day interaction with industry, preparation in entrepreneurship and personality
development courses.
Indian Institute of Information Technology, Bhubaneswar
An Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Bhubaneswar was established in the city of Bhubaneswar in Orissa in 2007. It is partly funded by the
government of Orissa, and partly self-financed. The institute has a 100 acre campus close to the new Infocity-II area in the city, where several IT companies
are building new offices. It started operating in September 2007, with a small initial intake of 60 students.
Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Kerala (IIITM-K)
IIITM-K is a premier institution of excellence in Science, Technology and Management related to Information that develops professionals and leaders
of high calibre imbued with values of entrepreneurship, ethics and social responsibility. IIITM-K will actively promote higher education and industry
across Kerala and beyond through its IT facilitated education programs and services.
The State of Kerala has excelled in the sphere of literacy and has been a guiding example and inspiration for the other states in India. The state enjoys
excellent primary and secondary schooling systems that guarantee affordable education to its people. The state also enjoys many good science and
arts colleges and is well known for its medical and nursing institutions. However, in the sphere of engineering and technology education, the state has
somewhat lagged behind its neighbours, necessitating many local students to seek admissions in institutions outside the state.
With this background in view and the need for the state to take positive steps towards establishing leadership in the fast growing Information Technology
field, a high-power committee consisting of leading figures of Industry, Academia and Government was constituted by the Government of Kerala, to initiate
steps towards establishing a premier institute of Information Technology and Management. Based on the deliberations of the committee, the Government
of Kerala decided to set up the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala (IIITM-K).
IIIT-DM - Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and
Manufacturing, Jabalpur (IIIT-DM)
PDPM-Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, an IIT Level Institute, was established in year 2005 by Govt Of
India for imparting skills to engineering students who can use IT in the field of Design and Manufacturing. Its task of incubation was given to Indian
Institute of Technology Kanpur. This institute is also having collaboration with Japan.
The institute offers degrees, at UG, PG and Doctoral levels, in following streams: At UG and PG level the degrees are offered in Computer
Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. At Doctoral level the degrees are offered in
Computer Science and Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
