Actually a difficult question.

Depends on what stream you follow, and which IIT.. or IIsc

First the basics.. M.Tech is industry oriented, whereas MS is research oriented. Means, MS has more papers to submit, whereas M.Tech tries to cover more subjects where you will know a wider range of topics, and thus suit a wider range of industry areas.

Having said that, it does not mean that with MTech you cannot go for a PhD, and doing MS will not fetch you a job. It is generally about orientation.

At IISc MS is a good option. Not that IITs are in any way inferior, but you must have heard the term "First among equals" Smile

Most of the people want money! Job! MTech, because of its orientation, has a higher demand. So a higher cutoff. MS has lesser demand, because in India, research market has a lesser demand, and fetches lesser salary if you are not from the premier institutes.

IISc also opens the door to the best institutions in the world for PhD. This might not be possible when you are from NITs or other institutes. Some institutes abroad recognize only IITs and IISc.

Mostly, at IITs and IISc, you dont have to worry about job once you take admission. Especially now, that all the industries are seeing a boom time.

But this also depends. At IISc, I assume this time the average salary would be 7-8 Lakhs. At some of the IITs, the salary would be comparable. and some IITs might not be able to match this salary. Depends on your stream, etc.

One point to note here - IISc's have barred foreign placements, whereas IITs have not. So, here the average of IITs might be higher even for this reason.
