Hi All,

I receive many mails regarding GATE preps. Here are some tips that might answer your questions as well....What follows are my suggestions and do take it as a friend's advice- I take no resposiblities ;-)

1. Which books should be followed for GATE and what subjects should we concentrate on?

For GATE preps, you can refer to the following Texts:

1. Basic Mathematics : It is not req. much in GATE, just numerical
maths is req. and you can use Rajaraman's Book which is short and
concise..that is suff., do Basic maths in the last month..
 2. Discrete Mathematics
Tremblay & Manohar
C.L. Liu
Prepare this subject well...it has lot of weightage..
3. Theory of Computation
Hopcroft and Ullman (for problem solving)
John C. Martin (for Theory)
Again, this one has lot of weightage..Prepare DM and TOC very well...start
NOW!

4. computer hardware
Not required..

5. Computer Organization
Hayes
OR
Hennesy Patterson (Hardware and Software Interface)

Usually Objective type questions are asked...

6. microprocessor (8085)
Gaonkar

7. Programming and Data Structures
Pratt's book abt Programming language is a useful reference..
Book by Mark A. Weiss is amongst the best book I came across for Algos and
data structures..

8. Language Processors
Tremblay Sorenson or
Aho, Ullman and Sethi (preferable)

9. OS
Silbershatz
Refer to Tanenbaum also if you want..

UNIX Internals
The Design of UNIX Operating System- Maurice Bach

10. DBMS
Korth, Silbershatz and Sudershan is good enough...

11. Digital Electronics..
Morris Mano
good subject to score quick marks...

Q2. How to manage time in GATE?
A. Try to do 6-8 questions problems correctly than trying to attempt everything.
